"Hey, My Boobs Are Up Here"

At work the other night, I had a serious limp going on. As I neared students I know during break they smiled at me, said “Hello” and then immediately looked down at my knee or in some cases said “Hello” while narrowing in on my limp. I know they don’t mean anything by it. It is natural to look when something appears to be out of whack. But as the eyes went to my knee I thought, “Hey fella, get your eyes back on my boobs and stop watching my limp.” Do you ever feel that way? Like you just want the focus to be anywhere but on your weak area? I think I might need to invest in some push up bras and low cut shirts to make certain the attention is anywhere other than my limp. I can just pull them out anytime I have a flare-up in my knee. I have tried the great big smile, but they have become accustomed to that so I think it is time to become inventive. Any ideas of your own?

  1. Well, if there was anything that caught my attention it was the title of this post – I loved it!

The split-second glance that people would make to my cane or crutches always used to drive me crazy…and then I decided just to get used to it…and now I don't even notice it anymore (although I know it's still there.)

This previous sentence took me years to move through though, so I'm not trying to pretend that it's easy.

  2. Joanne,
Good idea to add the singing. That way I am covering two of the seven intelligences – Spatial (my boobs) and musical (singing). I will be a more well rounded teacher. šŸ™‚

    RA GUY,
I think when my knee is bad for a while it becomes easier to handle. It is when it goes away for a while and then comes back again that it disappoints.

Yes, it is funny to imagine me with push up bras and low cut shirts. Every night before class I am already asking my family, “Can you see anything when I bend over?” Oh well, fun to imagine.

Thanks for all your comments. I always enjoy reading them.

  3. Robin,
The low cut shirt DOES work. I need to go shopping.

“Boobs” always catch the attention of men. I am only 41 years old. I still want the men focusing on my attractive body, not my limping knee. šŸ™‚ I want to be seen as a strong, active and attractive woman.

  4. You could always do the lipstick thing. Have Steve give you a big lipstick Kiss on your cheek and see how many people look……but you may get some comments about your sexual orientation too.
